Winter Water Evaporation

How much water would you regularly expect to evaporate over the winter. I closed the pool myself for the 1st year ever, we could not get the chemical balance correct as our pool company had to drain the pool completely to get rid of a wrinkle in the liner at the end of the season. I filled the water to below the jets as is normal in Canada. I've just drained the water from the winter cover and took a peek, it seems as thou it's an inch or so lower than last year when I closed it, is this normal?
