When to vacuum to waste?

Very heavy debris in the pool would be one. Another would be after using a flock treatment. All the coagulated debris will be laying on the pool bottom and you should vac to waste to avoid putting it into the filter. Vacuuming to waste during routine maintenance will just waste water. You might need to backwash for a minute or 2 afterwards but the entire time you are vacuuming you are not just dumping good water down the sewer.
