Use of PVC pipe for filter

I am just getting started with a new pool. I have a pentair cartridge filter (1hp motor) which came with flexible hose. Can I replace these hoses with pvc pipe? If so, can I get the fittings from a local hardware or are they specialty fittings? I was thinking of running pvc pipe from the filter up close to the pool near the ground and then hooking up to small pieces of flexible hose to make the connections at the pool.
