Effect of high Ph level on Aquarite cell?

Postby johnd13 » Fri 26 Jun, 2009 18:46

I am thrilled I stumbled on this site. Tons of great information and I apologize in advance if this question has been previously answered.

I have an AquaRite system that was installed in early 2005. No problems until this year and the cell acted up. Cleaned it, six weeks later it needed cleaning again and two days later it started giving false readings even though it was clean. I figured 4 1/2 years running it 8 hours a day and since I am in south FL, it runs year round It did pretty well. I have just installed a T-cell-15 replacement.

Now to my question, this year I have had a devil of a time getting my Ph under control. It always tests high and I have finally got it down to 7.6. Is it possible the high Ph contributed to the failure of the cell?

Thanks in advance.

Effect of high Ph level on Aquarite cell?

It's probably a combination of high pH, Calcium Hardness (CH) and Total Alkalinity (TA). Compute the saturation index using The Pool Calculator. To minimize scaling in the salt cell, you should target around -0.2 for the index and certainly not have it more than 0. You can also use 50 ppm Borates in the pool to act as an additional pH buffer that will lessen the pH rise at the hydrogen gas generation plate in the cell.

Read Water Balance for SWGs for more info.
