Priming

I bought this house with an inground pool, 22000 size.
All new liner, heater, pump and filter.

It says to fill the basket first with water before you turn it on but as soon as I turn it on there is no more water. It does after a minute pull the water from the line and seems to work fine.

Is this normal? I just don't want to wear out the pump.
