brown water

I am a new pool owner. I live in the country and have well water. My water is brown and the ph levels are high. Do you know if the brown water is just caused by the high ph or is there anything I might be able to use if it is metals? If it is just the ph, how long does it usually take to clear up after putting ph minus in the pool?
