Maintain Swimming Pool Easily

I have a question and I'm not sure where to post it. Can anyone give me some good reference material on whether in ground pools are better off drained and left empty for 6 months of the year, or is it better and cheaper to keep water in them and run chemicals and filtration all year long? Thank you.
