skimmer water depth

I presently have the water depth about 1/2 inch below the very top of the skimmer opening. The skimmer does not work very well even if I route all water return through the skimmer. Would the skimmer work better if the water level were lower. If so, how much lower?

water level is fine unless it is sucking air, check catridge filter or backwash sand filter and see if that helps , post and ill tell you some other options if it doesnt work hope this helps hopefully nothing is clogging your line
