Heaters Clunking Gas Valve

Pool Heater Question: Raypack Model C-265B-EN - natural gas.
From a medium/low thermostat setting, I start the unit and the following happens:
The pilot ticks, ignites, flames up for a second then shuts down, at which point the gas valve starts "clicking" and "clunking"...with intermittent pilot ticking... the higher I move the thermostat, the slower and more pronounced the "clunk".... Through it all, I can see that the pilot is still lit. help. argh. Thanks. - John

Check (all) ground wires and flame rectifier for soot and correct gap.
