Hello,
I am looking to clean the salt cell on my parents pool equipment. My dad has brain cancer and cannot communicate how he had been doing this previously. I spoke with someone at Leslie's who explained the process. I also watched some YouTube videos and the process seems straightforward. However, when I unscrew the salt cell, water gushes out and does not stop, nor slow down. The pump and equipment is about 30 ft downhill from the pool...is this normal? Do I need to wait it out? Or how can I stop the water flow?

If the equipmwnt is downhill of the pool then you should have isolating valves or block off the skimmer and returns. A main drain would be more difficult
You would need expandable rubber bungs
