How do I get Bleach to shock level?

I have tried to use bleach to get the green out of my pool. It is a 18" round and I put 3 gallons in the first night and 2 more the second-still it only barely registers as having a chlorine level. We filter 24/7 and vacuum/backwash daily. Water went from a pretty green to a really poopy brown. How much more bleach should I put in-I am using a 6% solution which is fairly inexpensive. Thanks for you input-we keep hoping for the crystal blue water we had 2 years ago.

You don't say your volume. Usually 2.5 gallons will bring it to shock level of 15 ppm. The trick is you have to keep it at shock level day and night to kill all the bacteria and algae. So you may have to add some additional liquid chlorine in the morning.

Also, 15ppm would be the shock level, if your CYA was at 30 to 50 ppm.
If you CYA has crept higher, your shock level would be 25ppm.

Turning brown, concerns me and makes me wonder if you don't have high iron or other metals in your water. Have it tested and treated if necessary.
