White flakes or something

Postby Aanders34 » Sun 14 Aug, 2022 17:15

Hi there,
I’m a new pool owner July 2021 install. I have a flat water, Fibreglass 44,000 litre pool and this year I have been dealing with constant white flakes every day. My chemical levels are all in line and I get it tested weekly. Everyday I wake up to more white flakes in the pool. I vacuum it up and rinse off my cartridge filter daily which is a pain. I’ve show. Pictures to 3 different pool places and not one of them has ever seen anything this bad. I’ve cleaned the salt cell twice this year already and there’s no scale. Looking for any help at all at this point. Side note: it’s a leisure pool precision 23 model that’s considered a “high waterline” pool and I’m having to fill it up daily to keep it at the 2 -3 inch skimmer line. I attach a filter to my hose as well.

Let's have your numbers (CYA is very important) Use a pool store if you don't have a FAS/DPD kit
FC:
TC:
pH:
TA:
CH:
CYA:
Where's your location?
Try the bucket test to check for a leak or evaporation

I’m in southwestern Ontario Canada. My last results (Aug 9) from the pool store is below:
Chlorine - 2
pH - 7.8
TA - 180
CH - 250
Stabilizer - 20
Phosphates - 50
Salt - 1600 (low salt pool)

I’ll set up the bucket test today

Can you collect any of the flakes?
I may not give you the answer you want to hear, but I will give an honest opinion of your situation as you decribe it.

While in the water not really. After I vacuum and hose off the cartridge the pool up in my rock bed and I’ve scooped a bunch up. It’s like a white plaster at that point

It's odd that you only have a single chlorine reading TC-FC = CC (combined chlorine)

Out of interest and slightly off topic, which lo salt chlorinator are you using?

Todays pools test results

Ch - 4
Ph - 7.6
TA - 200
CH - 220
Cya - 35

Thinking the ph and ta need to come down to prevent the white flakes….thoughts?

I would definitely do that, any saturated solution begins to drop out particles and could be. Its tricky on the end of a PC to be more specific but your pH will tend to rise quickly with that level of TA. You can bring down TA and pH with acid to about pH7 then aerate to raise the pH without raising TA, repeat a few times to get the TA down, I run mine around 45-50ppm and that has prevent the pH from rising so I haven't added any acid in 2-3 years.

my numbers from today are:
ch: 5
pH: 7.2
TA: 100
CH: 200
CYA: 30

Ive but 3L of muriatic acid in over the last 3 days (1L/day) and brought the ph and TA down. Still lots of white flakes settling on the ground but going to try and keep these levels for now i guess.

You should be able to flocculate and get them to clump to aid removal. Put the filter on recirculation add flocculent into the skimmer give it a chance to mix well then switch everything off.
Works best with a low pH 6.8 ish so add a bit more acid and you can always aerate to raise the pH.

apparently i was told i cant use flocculate because i have a cartridge filter and it will clog it up....also im not sure i know what you mean when you say i can aerate to raise pH. Can you explain?
Thanks
