Safe to swim with stabilizer above 100?

Postby 88keys » Fri 30 Aug, 2019 18:28

The chlorine level in my pool is within the acceptable range (on the higher end), and all the other readings are normal. The stabilizer is just over 100, despite recently draining half the pool and using liquid chlorine rather than chlorine tablets. My next step in troubleshooting the high stabilizer is replacing the sand in the (very old) sand filter. However, I have grandchildren staying with us this weekend, and of course they want to swim. My local pool store says it is too risky with high stabilizer, and cited cancer risks, among risk of rashes and stomach upsets. Opinions?

With stabiliser at 100 the chlorine would need to be higher than the acceptable range to correctly sanitise the water, you should increase the chlorine level to 7.5ppm.

Do not be alarmed, this will still be safe to swim in as most of the free chlorine is chemically bound to the stabiliser the actual active chlorine level not bound to the stabiliser is low but sufficient to sanitise the water.

Not increasing the free chlorine to this 7.5ppm is worse as there would be insufficient active chlorine to sanitise the water because the chlorine will be chemically bound to the stabiliser, increasing the chance of rashes (pseudomonas)
And upset stomachs from bacteria or viruses.

I had countless customers with high stabiliser levels, usually how I got my customers as they lost control of the pool water chemistry.

By example an indoor commercial can and do run with chlorine levels at 3ppm but these pools do not use stabiliser meaning the active free chlorine sanitiser is way over the level you'll be running at nearly equivalent to 30ppm of free chlorine with 30ppm of stabiliser.

Just tell the kids not to drink the pool water which is just good advice.

What is the acceptable range of chlorine that you have?
A lot of acceptable ranges don't take into consideration CYA
You can use the Chlorine / CYA Chart to check at what level to sanitise but drain half to get down to about 50
