Hayward Filter Clamp Spring Assembly Replacement Kit

Postby thepurplem0nkey » Thu 05 Apr, 2012 13:04

Thank goodness I found this forum, I am completely lost! My wife and I bought our home a few years ago and it came with an in ground (but fiberglass) pool. Almost everything in this house, including the pool filter, was not installed correctly, but that is a somewhat separate issue. We have been taking care of it for the past several years with no issues, but some parts have worn down and need to be replaced. I was able to find almost all of the parts without issue, EXCEPT for the Hayward Filter Clamp Spring Assembly Nut that tightens the entire assembly (It has become stripped over the years). Here is a picture of the nut: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/ ... lpump3.jpg

Ive searched all over the place online for what I assumed would be a cheap replacement part. Apararntly, the nut has been discontinued and the entire filter clamp has been redesigned (according to the information found HERE: http://www.poolcenter.com/parts_filter_ ... filter.htm)

So, a few questions for the experts:

1. What size filter fin (the actual white fins inside the filter) do I need to purchase? I can't figure out what the dimensions are for my filter and I need to replace them. I don't have an pics of the internal filter, but here is a pic of the outside....maybe those in the know will just be able to tell? http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v419/ ... pump_2.jpg

2. Can I simply purchase the NEW clamp assembly (significantly more expensive than if I were to just replace the nut on the current assembly....like, 180 bucks versus 2 bucks) if I am unable to purchase a nut? Does this just replace the one I have or is there some more labor/installation involved?

3. Can anyone tell me anything about this pump? I know next to nothing about pool pumps in general. I don;t know if the info on this pic will help, but here it is anyway: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v419/ ... pump_1.jpg

I very much appreciate any responses as again, I am lost and want to spend as little as possible to replave the parts that needed to be replaced :-)

Hello, this is an easy solution

1) The fins as you call them are actually called "grids" or "DE grids". When ordering replacement grids, measure the grid lengthways for the correct size. I'm in the industry and the one thing I dislike about Hayward's Pro-Grid filters is their lack failure to place a specific model number label on the filter. They print a label with ALL of the filter sizes. Anytime I encounter a Hayward Pro-Grid, I take 1 grid to the parts store and match it up with the new on so it is the exact hight. TAKE NOTE, there is always 1 grid that is slightly less wide than the rest. There is a reason for that, it allows clearance for the water return pipe inside the filter.(Part #17 in the exploded view diagram) It's also important to remember exactly where that less wide filter grid is placed on the manifold.
Make sure that little sock looking part on tip of the manifold (Part #14) is not torn. If it's torn, it needs to be replaced, otherwise powdery DE will come back through your return lines into your nice pool.

2) yes, make sure it's the correct diameter and applicable to the Pro-Grid filter. Example, this site has the replacement kit. (I'm just using them as an example, I do not endorse this site)

3) Hmmm, you've seemed to recapture the filter again.

Minus the pump picture, this is very straight forward and within the bounds of Do-It-Yourself, so that you may save some money.
The only tricky part is re-assembly of the filter grids on your first try.

Thankfully, YouTube has some videos to give you an idea how it all comes together.

For a retail chain this a good general guide
