Diagnose pool light failure?

Postby jefferis » Tue 30 Aug, 2022 09:41

I have an underwater pool light that stopped working. The symptoms are:
it turned on briefly but then went out
attempts to turn it on and off fail
when I turn it on, the transformer (or whatever it is) makes an audible hum or buzz that I don't remember hearing before, so I know power is going at least to that unit.

Trying to figure out if the light needs to be replaced or the transformer is bad, but not sure how to diagnose it.

Hoping someone can help me figure it out. The pool was installed in 2017.

TIA,
Jeff

LED or halogen, sounds like halogen and they fail all the time you have done well at 5 years. Fit LED saves a fortune in electricity and will last min 10 years.
I may not give you the answer you want to hear, but I will give an honest opinion of your situation as you decribe it.

Thanks again. So I assume the LED can handle the same current as the halogen? and they have to use a low voltage for underwater anyway!

I meant that I won’t need to change the transformer to install an LED replacement?

You probably will have to use a LED transformer suitable for your LED as a halogen one won't work

Seconded, LED drivers limit voltage and or current to stop the LED being fried

thanks I'll have to contact the installer (Anthony and Sylvan) to make sure of what I have currently and what I will need to get.

Okay, I am looking on my original install contract and it says it is an LED light. So I am now wondering if the transformer, which buzzes rather loudly is the problem?

Check the transformer voltage output with a multimeter it could be AC or DC and you would know what to get
If you have no voltage then it's the transformer
