I have a 20,000 gallon in-ground, vinyl liner pool which has been crystal clear so far this season, then suddenly went cloudy over 2-3 days. Now a sort of milky, cloudy color.
Water test results are as follows:
Free Chlorine 1.63ppm
Total Chlorine 1.63ppm
Total alkalinity 123ppm
pH 7.8
Calcium hardness159ppm
Total dissolved solids 0
I've tried adding flocculent to filter (starite sand filter) and its making no difference. Sand hasn't been changed in filter in past 10 years. Filter is running 24 hr with good return pressure, but pressure showing on filter dial is down a bit compared to previous years. I've tried everything and am now considering changing sand in filter, but don't want to keep trying random solutions.
Any help diagnosing problem would be greatly appreciated..

You did not post the Cyanuric Acid (CYA) level. Please get yourself a good test kit -- either the Taylor K-2006 or the TFTestkits TF-100 with the latter kit having more reagents for the tests you use the most. Read how to Shock Your Pool.

Yes, sorry.
Cyanuric acid 10ppm
Copper 0ppm
Iron 0ppm
I had the water tested by my local pool company who have a fairly sophisticated tesing lab.

All your values seem to be acceptable so taking a look at the sand is a good idea. 10 years is a long time for the same sand so there may be clumping or channeling in the filter.
